Watching a movie about an Orthodox Jewish woman

making me wonder exactly how Jewish I should make Baum.  Obviously, as a Red Army officer, his Bolshevism has to shape his Judaism, but I want him to retain at least some level of Jewishness to him.  Need to learn more about  Jews in the Revolution/Civil War
