The Sharpshooter on Picket Duty, 1863-By Winslow Homer
Winslow Homer (1836-1970), who often tackled subjects that were taboo for late 19th century mainstream America, such as African American genre scenes, women’s work outside the home and the pitfalls of the bourgeoisie, captured the essence of the new modern age.
Homer’s compositional style choice for A Sharp Shooter on Picket Duty (pictured) strays from the traditional battle scenes of the day. Rather than representing a group of soldiers in the heat of combat, he simply depicts a solitary figure using the new technology of the day- the modern rifle- studied and poised to take out his target, a target that remains outside of the canvas and unknown to the viewer.

Painted wooden paddle doll with mud beads for hair
Probably from Thebes, EgyptLate Middle Kingdom, around 1750 BC
Female figurines were included in burials from the Predynastic period onwards. They were often highly stylized, emphasizing the sexual characteristic of the figure, such as the breast, hips and pubic area.
In the past, there have been two opposing interpretations of these figurines. One argues that they should be interpreted as dolls, ignoring the emphasis placed on their female attributes. The other recognizes only these features, and the figurines are seen as ‘concubine figures’, intended to provide sexual gratification in the Afterlife. This interpretation fails to take account of the fact that the figures appear in the burials of women as well as men. The current opinion about these figures is that they were representations of human fertility. They were placed in burials to guarantee eternal rebirth, symbolizing the sexual aspects of regeneration.
This type of female figurine was placed in burials of the Middle Kingdom (2040-1750 BC) in Thebes. Its shape has led it to be called a ‘paddle doll’ and follows the convention for this type of female figure, emphasizing the hips and hair. The body is often painted with a colourful geometric design to represent the dress and sometimes the jewellery of the woman.

Gundestrup, Denmark. 150-0 BC
This cauldron is made from 13 silver plates. The hammered and gilded plates weigh almost 9 kg. On the outside, large deities are accompanied by small humans, animals and mythical creatures in pairs. Interior shows scenes populated with many figures, both human and animals. One of them shows a parade of warriors carrying a carnyx, a Celtic trumpet.

athenainargyle:

better photos and details of the Huri Altar!

This is comprised of three pieces of plywood and 92 lithographs pasted on top, with gold spraypaint details and a hand-drawn Sasha.

This piece came from a lithograph I did earlier that emulated Palekh icon painting - I really wanted to get back more into the Byzantine style of icons and make that symbolism work for me to tell the story I wanted to tell. A lot of people walked by and went “Oh, he looks so sad”, because normally I draw Sasha being very cheerful - this however is about that really intense doubt of having your worldview tested and also about how he believes he’s died and his experiences with the Huri are either a dying hallucination or a strange afterlife. My litho teacher gleefully described it as “fun and blasphemous” which I really like - the existence of extraterrestrial life is going to end up seeming really blasphemous to a lot of human beliefs.
